The terms get used loosely online. Personal number plates, personalised number plates, private plates and private registrations all describe the same thing: a UK vehicle registration chosen by the buyer rather than allocated by the factory.
Strictly, every one of these plates is a DVLA number plate, because the DVLA issues the registration. The differences are marketing language, not legal categories. What matters in practice is what the combination of letters and numbers says about you, and what you are willing to pay for it. Yellowhite's entry price for a personal number plate is £40 plus VAT, plus the fixed £80 DVLA assignment fee. Plenty of legitimate plates sit at that level. Prices climb from there based on rarity and how recognisable the combination is.
Almost any. The one rule the DVLA enforces is age: a registration cannot make your car look newer than it actually is. A 2024-dated plate cannot go on a 2018 car. A dateless cherished plate can be assigned to any age of vehicle. We flag compatibility at checkout.
A managed transfer on a current registration normally completes in 7 to 10 working days. Retention transfers using a V778 certificate take 3 to 4 weeks because the DVLA processes those by post. We keep you updated throughout.
